They’re gone.

All of them. They piled into the minivan for their various Wednesday night church activities. I offered my benedictions and walked into the house, letting out a cheer that made Helen and Kenny and Bunny the bunny all jump.

The whole house to myself.

The plan is to finish my Greek study. That’s always been the habit on Wednesday nights, though it was usually at a coffee shop after I’d dropped off the kids. But now *they* all left and *I* got to stay.

So the coffee’s brewing. How can I study Greek if I don’t have my coffee? (Didn’t the schoolmaster say that in *The Wall*?)

Gotta get out

My lovely bride and I need to get out of the house. A movie? A dinner? A stroll in a park? A shopping trip? A trip to Tahiti? We use babysitters for obligation-type stuff so often that we rarely get one for just plain fun. What should we do?

A photo from our last date.

What’s water like?

Bedtime. We were trying to encourage Jack to not drink all of his “nighttime” water at once. Nevertheless, slurp, slurp. slurp. “Jack… save some for later!”

“But, it’s like meth!” he pleaded.

Like meth. Bwaaaahahaaa!

There are billboards around which scared Jack that show a woman’s portrait before and after meth addiction. The “after” shot is pretty bad. Eventually the kids asked why people would put up a billboard like that, so we’d explained that meth, like some other drugs, can make people really want more once they have some.

Apparently, like water.

Clouds are starting to part

Big weekend. Replaced a bathroom faucet. Visited a family birthday party. Then spent about twelve hours at my Mac working on various projects. And finally, many are drawing to a close.

Baby robinBut in the midst of my busy weekend, I still had time to notice that our home is becoming a nature center. Well, it was actually last week I woke up to this baby robin hanging out at the dining room window (click for a bigger view). What I couldn’t catch with the camera was Mama Robin bringing baby a worm. That was pretty cool. The baby was too young to be nervous about being near a Human’s house, but Mama was definitely uncomfortable.

BunnyBut big deal, right? Robins are all over the place. True, but bunnies aren’t. Well, at least not out in the open taking a nap. He came out at bedtime last night and just sat there. I was able to take this picture by creeping out of the front door. He saw me and didn’t even care. We wondered if it was the same one Kenny used to chase around and around the house when he was little. Probably not – that was about six years ago – but it brought back a fun memory.

GoatOK, fine… bunnies are not exactly novel city creatures, either. Well, my favorite of the weekend was discovered Saturday morning when I woke up. I was clicking away at the dining room table, when I looked over and saw this fellow. Yes, a goat. I’ve heard his little bleats floating around, but I’ve never caught a good look at him. He’s new to the neighborhood. A little mexican lady came over and tied him to the tree in our boulevard for a snack. He’s their pet. There’s a little kid in their family who came over and bugged it for a while. I kept hoping the goat would get fed up and bite him. Or I was going to have to. I’ve never understood kids who were unkind to animals; portends bad things. Anyway, to my disappointment, no one got bit.

As I was driving in to work today, I remembered that I’d sprayed some weed killer over there. I was wondering if I should tell them, but their english is poor and I wouldn’t want them to think I disliked having the goat on our boulevard. Then I thought a sign might do the trick. Symbols! International!

What would I do? I thought “well, a goat with a circle slash for ‘no goat’… that’s good… and then a skull and crossbones for ‘poison'”. Then I realized that would look like “if you bring your goat here I will kill him”.

So I’m not doing the sign.

Happy Birthday to me!

Yesterday. Very nice day. The sun broke through after four grey days of rain. I had an office party on Monday where I got pizza, pie, and a nice Apple Store gift card. What to get? I think I’d like this iPod audio recording accessory, but it’s not actually out yet.

Later I had a nice evening at home, even though yet one more has fallen to strep; Anna. Not fallen like died. Been stricken, maybe? Anyway, Helen, despite illness and sick kids, prepared an awesome meal: chicken tortellini alfredo, ceasar salad, nice bread, and creme bruleé for dessert. Well, *first* dessert. Then there was cake.

Kenny spearheaded (and mostly financed) the family buying me *The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)* widescreen DVD. Cool.

Kenny Martin the Younger… Writer

[1]: http://www.kennymartin.com/

Well, Kenny’s been talking a lot about how he wants to be a writer when he grows up. So now he has to blog three posts a week. Poor kid. :)

He likes it, though. I told him he’ll need practice, and the technology part helps make it interesting. And the fact that friends and family can take a peek at what he’s up to and comment back will help him along, I think. Hint. ;)

Anyway, see what’s on his brilliant ten year old mind at [www.kennymartin.com][1].

Home today

Came home after a brief visit to work. Helen sick. Jack recovering. Even the cat threw up.

**Later:** Playing team Scrabble. Jack’s on my team. He notices we drew an N. “Man, if we only had two Ts. Then we’d have TNT!” Thank you, Warner Brothers. :)

What a weekend

I woke up Saturday with with the latest delivery from the Cold-of-the-Week Club. But there would be no relaxing and sleeping it off. The usual Saturday tasks: tidying, Anna at ballet, more tidying. Then it’s off to Grandma Martin’s 90 birthday party, which was very nice. Good conversation with family I haven’t seen for a while, and some I’d never before met.

On the way to get the kids and head home, I got a call that I needed to teach on Judges and Ruth at church the next morning; the scheduled teacher was stuck away from home. Of course, I hadn’t read it yet. Last week I had to pick between reading that and Greek study, since illness left me too short on time to do both.

Well, I was up early studying Sunday and class went well. But that wasn’t my big concern for Sunday. Sunday was also the day that [Helen’s family and the Vadnais Heights Lions Club was set to clear as much tree and brush material as possible][1] for Helen’s mom. Really good, hard, physical work. Which on a regular day is fun, and on a sick day is devastating.

I ended up a pile of weak uselessness heaped on the couch. And looking like a wreck at work this morning. And feeling the part.

And now, to sleep. Good night.
